 Re: Avatar Picture Thread
Idea from another forum: They do a pre-recorded acceptance speech with Neytiri. IMO, trumps anything else in hilarity so far...

IMO, trumps anything else in hilarity so far... Neytiri would be up against some seriously stiff competition. Check out what happened when Gollum won an MTV Movie Award for Best Digital Performance.

CameronBlogspot wrote: TheT1 wrote: Well, supposedly its Titanic that made that change and proved that you dont need a megastar for a movie to be sucessful There've been loads of blockbusters over the years that didn't have stars ('Star Wars' and 'Jurassic Park' to name just two that pop into my head), and Leonardo DiCaprio was definitely well-known in '97 ('Romeo and Juliet' had been a hit with young people just a year before). So I don't know that Cameron is somehow responsible for this trend (assuming it is a trend). I think that there are broader changes in the culture which might be to credit - or blame - for what's happened. There's just been a shift from "celebrating" celebrities and just mocking them endlessly. I read an editorial in Newsweek that joked that most celebrity movies and TV shows are now promotions for their private life, where the real money is, rather than people being interested in private lives after they regard somebody's works. So, I think that there have just been huge, dramatic changes in the culture in the past decade. (Same thing in the sports world, too, by the way.) I kinda think that the only people who are "celebrated" are those in the government and military. But I guess that's another theory altogether. But I think it picked up after titanic. Premiere magazine was predicting that movies wont be star-oriented anymore thanks to Titanic - check the box in the right corner - http://www.flickr.com/photos/sinisteraglets/4277835574/in/set-72157623093341785/

 Re: Avatar Picture Thread
But, again, that doesn't work because the #1 international movie at that time, 'Jurassic Park', definitely didn't have any stars as big as Leonardo DiCaprio, and the #1 U.S. movie, 'Star Wars', also hadn't had any stars. So when you have the two biggest movies of all time before Titanic, and neither one of them had a star, I think you can safely say that there was precedent. Just because Entertainment Weekly claims that they once claimed that that might be true....(whew)....doesn't mean that it's true. And the larger theory, I think, was that 'Titanic' was to credit for the weakening of "star power" throughout the 2000's, right? Well, I'm pretty darn sure that what's really to credit has got nothing to do with 'Titanic' and everything to do with the rise of "franchises".
