IMO, trumps anything else in hilarity so far...

There've been loads of blockbusters over the years that didn't have stars ('Star Wars' and 'Jurassic Park' to name just two that pop into my head), and Leonardo DiCaprio was definitely well-known in '97 ('Romeo and Juliet' had been a hit with young people just a year before).

So I don't know that Cameron is somehow responsible for this trend (assuming it is a trend). I think that there are broader changes in the culture which might be to credit - or blame - for what's happened. There's just been a shift from "celebrating" celebrities and just mocking them endlessly. I read an editorial in Newsweek that joked that most celebrity movies and TV shows are now promotions for their private life, where the real money is, rather than people being interested in private lives after they regard somebody's works.

So, I think that there have just been huge, dramatic changes in the culture in the past decade. (Same thing in the sports world, too, by the way.) I kinda think that the only people who are "celebrated" are those in the government and military. But I guess that's another theory altogether.
